Chinese Lion Dance at Pegasus

WHAT IS THE LION DANCE?

The Lion Dance is a traditional Chinese Dance in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during the Lunar New Year period and other Chinese traditional, cultural and religious festivals. It may also be performed at important occasions such as business opening events, special celebrations or wedding ceremonies, or may be used to honour special guests by the Chinese communities.

On Friday 16 February Pegasus hosted the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne as they performed the Lion Dance for our guests and visitors in our bar and restaurant to help celebrate the Year of the Dog.

The performers made there way through the lobby and restaurant - with the mischievous Lion even dancing on the tale top in the bar before making his way to eat the dangling lettuce left for him in the lobby. Luckily, our resident Airline Crew - China Eastern were checking in just in time to see the Lion in action.

Established in 1968 the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne Lion Dance Team, like other Lion Dance troupes, has taken the art of lion dancing outside of China to share with its local Chinese community. Throughout the years, the Team has taken part in numerous performances and contributed to many events and festivals to help spread the art of lion dancing beyond the boarders of Melbourne, Australia.
